The most ordinary girl in the world /Following Jesus/Trying Not to Raise Assholes/Drinking Tequila/Zero Bullshit

Instagram post 2342222435368347949_1587416103 Yesterday Grace and I were talking about a student of mine who is really lonely. She said that she was lucky because she had never been lonely. And I mentioned about all the years of moving in the summer...wasn’t she lonely then? Nope. She said that she has always had her siblings...the three brothers...She’s never been lonely. A couple of weeks ago, Jake asked me if I thought him and his siblings would still talk and still get together even after they had all moved away...And we did some simple math...we eat dinner as a family most every night...In the last 16 years, they have eaten roughly 5800 meals together...not including some random breakfasts and summer lunches...These are the people...your brothers and sisters...who hold the stories of your life. They are the people who can say one word and send you into laughter till tears fall down your face. They know how to impersonate your parents better than anyone else. They are filled with late night conversations and TV shows. They know how to make you angrier than anyone else in the entire universe. But they also know when you are sad and heartbroken and embarrassed. They have witnessed your first crush and your first car and your first poor choices gone wrong. They have heard you get yelled at by both parents at 2am and they have witnessed your awards in bleachers inside middle school gyms. They are the ones who know your story. Who love your story. Who see your face and have a million memories to go along with it...It’s a full house over here...We are literally stepping over each other all the time. There are rarely any leftovers anymore and there are laundry mountains to be moved on the regular. But man, I’m so glad we had all these kids to love each other. And yes, I do believe you will still talk all the time when our house is empty. Y’all are the best thing we ever did. And y’all are brothers and one shiny sister. And this is family. And these are your built in best friends. Love them well today. Eat a meal together. Hug them tight and hold on tighter. These are your people. Know that you’re lucky today.

Instagram post 2340848446448359824_1587416103 I don’t know what it is about being home...at your home home...I drove to my mom’s house yesterday with two of my kids. We walked in about 3pm...made some conversation...and I walked back to a bedroom and fell asleep for hours. Hours. Like I didn’t have a care in the world. My mom is currently making all of us breakfast, and I’m sitting on the couch in pajamas...eating bacon waiting for my eggs and about to make a cup of coffee. My kids are happy. And I have zero responsibilities. And this is what I needed I think...to be taken care of for just a minute in this crazy world. Even when you’re 44 you still sometimes just want to be home and sleep and have someone else ask you how you’re doing and if you’re hungry and have treats waiting for you. Y’all. Moms are the best. Home is the best. And goodness it is such an important piece of your heart that lives here...at home...where the naps are the best in the universe. I’ll probably take 3 more before I go back to my home...and I am tucking it all in my heart that someday my kids will walk in from a hard year and just breathe in and out...walk back to their old rooms...and let all the cares in the world drift away. If you don’t know your value moms, just know that when your kids are 44 they will totally know the peace you bring to all your people moving mountains...and provide the rest we need because moms will take the wheel and let their babies sleep while they navigate the road ahead.
